In a very real sense this book is the saga of a woman who is Everywoman. Mia Barkan Clarke is a working artist and a NYS Licensed, Registered & Board-Certified practicing Creative Arts Therapist. She holds a Master of Arts in Creative Arts Therapy from Hofstra University, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fabric Styling, specializing in Woven Design and an Associates Degree in Textile/Surface Design from Fashion Institute of Technology (NYC). Mia has been an instructor of Art Therapy at Molloy College in Rockville Centre, and has lectured at Hofstra University and Touro College. Mia is the author of My Sacred Circle Mandala Journal--a creative workbok for self-discovery and exploration consisting of 28 different Mandala directives, including a Recovery Mandala and a Stress-Be-Gone Mandala. Mia lectures and runs workshops about Mandalas and Expressive Weaving (Mia's specialty) within her practice and for various conference venues. Mia is multilingual (Italian, French, Hebrew) whose poetry has been published nationally and internationally, including (USA) Lips, The New Scribes, (UK) Poetry Monthly, and (Wales) The Seventh Quarry. As a working atist, Mia has illustrated multilngual poetry books for the international literary-arts publisher Cross-Cultural Communicaions, has had a number of commissions for her paintings locally and abroad, and has exhibited her work at a number of venues, including a mother-daughter show exhibited at The Stage Gallery, The Howland Cultural Center, Mallette Gallery, and The Paterson Museum. Mia has developed several series, including Sisters of the World and Inner Face. Sisters of the World series, in mixed-media--oil sticks, acrylic, pen & ink, watercolor gouche--explores the relationship among he vast variety of ethnic, national, spiritual and religious, folkloric, mythical, and biblical women. This concentration is a celebration of the sisterhood of all women--how far we've come, and how far we have yet to go. As a multilingual speaker, Mia has been able to probe beneath the surface of a number of cultures. Mia's textile background is clearly evident in her painting. Her inspiration comes from motifs in ethnic designs, ancient interiors, peasant garments, and ornate architecture, and from nature. The artist introduces the many sides of herself, as well as all women through the Sisters of the World series, demonstrating the deep complexitiy and conflict within every woman, hence honoring, embracing, and celebrating the differences within the feminine spirit. Sisters of the World invites the viewer to extend oneself into the pysche of women past, present, and even future. Mia's Sisters of the World paintings have been published in the Paterson Literary Review. Inner Face is a series of drawings and paintings based on her response to working with clients in an acute in-patient psychiatric hospital facility. Mia, both artist and art therapist, emphasizes the importance of self-expression through the arts and practices what she preaches. Mia has shown Inner Face in several solo exhibitions.

"Leo Vroman is that increasingly rare phenomenon in our time: a happy man. As the French author Coletee said: 'It take a kind of genius to be happy.' There are then three reasons to attribute genius to Vroman: first, as biomaterial sceintist, author of BLOOD and othr scientific treatises; secon, as poet, author of more than forty volumes of verse, prose, and drawing; and third, as happy man. 'Enjoying life is all I do all day, / but for this life there's no possible cure. / Today master, tomorrow manure, / for so it goes, and that is quite OK.' —Tr. C. N. W. How much of his acceptance of the generative and degenerative process, this enjoyment of every phase of it is the result of his lengendary love for "Tineke" (née Georgine Sanders), his wife, must remain a speculation. Born in Gouda, The Netherlands, in 1915, he studied biology at the University of Utrecht, escaped from the country when the Nazis took over, and became a soldier in Indonesia, where he was promptly imprisoned by the Japanese. On his way home, after the war, he passed through New York and has been a resident for most of the past 40 years. They live a rather isolated life in Brooklyn, speaking Dutch with each other, working in English, and writing in both languages. Vroman recently retired as a research career scientist at the Brooklyn Veteran's Hospital but continues his blood research as a member of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Columbia University. Visits to Holland, where he has collected almost every possible literary prize, are frequent, but he is known for a quip that has become almost a Dutch motto in a nation of restless travelers. 'Better homesick than Holland!' he seems to thrive in the compartive anonymity of the United States, where, in the end, one is lonelier but freer. His frequently rhyming poetry is both playful and philosophical, and draws on the biological for its point of view. His description of an autopsy, for instance, in which he describes emptying the corpse of a young woman with almost gleeful delight, may be hard for the layman to follow. And yet, in his 1968 introduction to BLOOD, the biological point of view opens up vistas of great lyricism: 'The last jungles in the world seem to withdraw almost eagerly from advancing man. The forests drain themselves of beasts and flatten into meadows, the meadows are turned into suburbs and the suburbs are swallowed by cities. The only thriving wildlife still barely touched by man is the hot, confusing and poorly lit world within himself. . . . The strangely shaped glands and bones, the transparent lungs, the madly dense tangle of cells in the brain hold worlds within worlds; and through it all and always, streams the blood.' In 'Beyond Progress,' a rcent address he gave to The Netherlands Cancer Institute, he says: 'The speed with which our understanding of everything and life itself progresses is amazing. Our knowledge grows and changes as fast as the reeling shadow of someone passing a street lamp in the night. . . . In the life span between birth and death I see only one duty, to try and understand something about the incrdible reality in which we live.' For Vroman, biology is the basis for a holistic vision of life. Everything is connected with something else. In the greatest chaos, order can be discovered, and love functions in this as the epoxy.
