104 Wolak, Bill & Karimi-Hakak, Mahmood Love Emergencies: Poems in English and Persian
Merrick, New York, USA Cross-Cultural Communications 2010 0893044806 / 978-0-89304-480-0 First Hard Cover New Poetry 6x9 Stefan Jamiokowski
"'Love Emergencies' evolved as an experiment in translation in which we sought to communicate our most intimate thoughts and feelings across language and culture without footnotes. . . . Although sealed in language on the page, these poems are seldom content to yield to their own limitations. Instead, they are always straining to reach beyond language into the turmoil of actual experience, where, as in a real emergency, when everything is at stake, language gets left behind and the body takes over—waving goodbye, touching a hand, opening into an embrace." —Bill Wolak & Mahmood Karimi-Hakak

The main character/narrator is unemployed after having quit his job as a magazine reporter. He barely survives on the money his girlfriend earns. One day, he wanders through the streets of Seoul while his girlfirend is in the hospital. He visualizes himself as a lion walking through the desert under the moon in western China. The duality of the character's feelings about his meaningful world of fantasy based on cultural and historical content and the unreality of his ordinary life provides an escape for this lonely individual. Ultimately, it is this duality which enables him to survive in a meaningless world. Winner of the 2006 Korea Prose Translation Award Winner of the 2006 Korea Prose Translation Award
