Vladimir Levchev was born in 1957 in sofia, Bulgaria, where he was graduated majoring in History of Art from the Academy of Fine Arts. He is the author of seven books of poetry and a book of literary essays in Bulgarian. He is the translator into Bulgarian of a number of volumes of selected poems by T. S. Eliot, Odysseus Elytis, Allen Ginsberg, Stanley Kunitz, Henry Taylor, and Stanley H. Barkan, and many other contempory American poets, as well as the ancient Indian religious and philosophic poem BHAGAVAD-GITA. His own poetry has been translated into English in four anthologies, including the Penguin anthology of East European poetry, CHILD OF EUROPE (1990), and in the literary magazines PARTISAN REVIEW, BLACK WARRIOR, PAINTBRUSH, FOLIO, POET LORE, and POETRY (Chicago). LEAVES FROM THE DRY TREE is his first Bulgarian-English collection. Henry Taylor, his translator, received the 1986 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry, and UNDERSTANDING FICTION: POEMS 1986-1995 was translated into Bulgarian by Levchev and published in a bilingual edition by Cross-Cultural Communications in 2002.
